Invasive Species Eradication, Wake Island

Client: USDA, sub to Island Conservation

Location: Wake Island Atoll

Completion Year: 2024

Scope of Work:

  • Logistics
  • Heavy equipment operations
  • Repair and maintenance

Brice provided logistics support, heavy equipment and operators, and equipment repair and maintenance support to Island Conservation whose scope of work was invasive species eradication on Wake Island Atoll—specifically, the eradication of the rat population (at least two million rats) across this three-island atoll. According to Island Conservation, invasive species are a leading cause of native species extinction on islands and the loss of biodiversity on a global scale (invasive species spread globally primarily through human transportation systems).

Brice coordinated with Island Conservation to receive and load 13, 20-foot containers of project equipment and supplies onto the barge in Seattle for transport to Wake Island. Upon arrival to Wake Island, Brice unloaded and stored the containers in the client’s staging area. To execute the fieldwork, our equipment operators transported rat eradication supplies to strategic points for Island Conservation to retrieve via helicopter to sling and spread across the atoll.

Brice also provided vehicle maintenance in our equipment yard to ensure smooth operations during this project.
